EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
