Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
