The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love
Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
